Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?”
Do you know WHY you do what you do? Simple as this question may sound, it’s often the question that many of us, our world, can’t answer. We can easily tell someone what we do and usually how we do it… In fact, what is the basis of most commercials on tv, what the first thing you ask when you meet someone new, and what drives most of the world around us; but why is the question that often goes unanswered; yet, why should be the foundation behind the how and the what in every aspect of our lives.
“People don’t by what you do they buy why you do it. It’s what you believe that should inform the how which then just happens to make the what.”
Take Apple for example: “Apple doesn’t just sell fancy iPhones. They believe they have something that will change your life…. How? Using it will make your life easier, What? It just so happens to be an iPhone….” Why do we buy Apple products? Because we buy into their belief of Why they create the iPhone in the first place.
Why –> How –> What
