Last weekend we had the pleasure of spending the day with some of our best friends John and Christie Alvarado who run a non-profit organization called Reflect Ministries. For more than a decade John has been running a breakfast program in Tijuana for kids. Its purpose is to bring a simple meal to children in need, a meal that they can count on every week when many of them don’t know when they will eat next.
The breakfast program was just the beginning… John and Christie, along with many volunteers, care for children and families in Mexico through new mother care packages, VBS, week long camps, handing out warm blanks, and providing warm meals – but their deepest desire is to love these kids with long term relationships. John would say, “Truly loving these children is extremely difficult, it takes commitment, and it requires much more than service work. Yet loving them, truly loving them is what they really need.”
John has seen first hand how the cold can kill during the winter in Mexico, “Death by exposure is a real thing, not to be treated lightly.” Therefore, thanks to the support of many Southern California churches and Reflect’s desire to do their best to make a difference, more than 3000 blankets have been handed out over the winter. John would be first to tell you that handing out blankets is such a small thing, most certainly not enough….. what is truly important is learning to truly love the people you are serving and build meaningful relationships.
It was such an honor to join John and Christie last weekend, not just to have fun with our friends, but to begin making a video that will tell their story.Posted // in // My Life // No Comments
